VW Said to Discuss Buying Insolvent Carmaker Karmann

Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG, Europe’s biggest automaker, is discussing a proposed takeover of insolvent car manufacturer Wilhelm Karmann GmbH at an executive board meeting today, two people familiar with the situation said.

A transaction would have to be approved by Volkswagen’s supervisory board, which meets Nov. 11, said the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations are confidential. VW, whose executive board is meeting today at its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, may pay 50 million euros ($74 million) to 75 million euros, one of the people said.

Karmann, based in Osnabrueck in the state of Lower Saxony, employs 1,600 workers in Germany and about half of them will be fired on Nov. 1 as insolvency dealings proceed, the people said. The manufacturer makes roof systems for some models from Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG.

“There’s not much economic reasoning from Volkswagen’s perspective,” said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, director of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg- Essen. VW may have wanted to rescue Karmann to return a favor to Lower Saxony, which as VW’s second-largest shareholder prevented a takeover of the carmaker by Porsche SE this year, he said.

Lower Saxony Premier Christian Wulff, who sits on VW’s supervisory board, thwarted former Porsche Chief Executive Officer Wendelin Wiedeking’s plan to topple power structures at VW by upholding the so-called Volkswagen law which gives the state and workers a blocking minority.

Lower Saxony

Karman’s hometown Osnabrueck, about 170 kilometers (106 miles) west of Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters, is Wulff’s constituency. Local elections in Lower Saxony are scheduled to take place in 2011.

Christoph Adomat, a Volkswagen spokesman, and Karmann’s Christian Eick declined to comment when reached by Bloomberg.

Karmann traces its origins to 1901. Its best-known model was the Karmann Ghia sports car, built on a VW Beetle chassis from 1955 to 1974. Other orders included building convertible versions of the Mercedes-Benz CLK model and the A4 sedan made by Volkswagen’s Audi luxury division. Revenue last year dropped 16 percent to 1.3 billion euros from 2007.

Karmann, which filed for bankruptcy protection in April, employs another 1,150 workers at units in the U.S., Japan, Mexico, Portugal and Poland. Those divisions aren’t part of the insolvency proceedings.

The bankruptcy filing also includes the Automotive Global Service GmbH, Karmann-Engineering-Services GmbH, Karmann-Rheine GmbH & Co. KG and Karmann Rheine-Verwaltungs GmbH divisions. Ottmar Hermann, a Frankfurt-based lawyer, is acting as insolvency administrator and has estimated that liquidity at Karmann could last until Nov. 11, the day VW’s board is due to discuss a possible takeover, one of the people said.

Fair for Millionaires Flops

What if they held a millionaire fair and no one came?
That is pretty much what happened to the seventh annual Millionaire Fair in Moscow over the weekend.

A report from AFP says the annual celebration of all things Blingshevik was sparsely attended, except for the occasional luxury purveyors praying for a miracle. (The fair didn’t fare well last year either, leading me to put it into the Wealth Report’s official “bad timing department.”)

The AFP article said organizers hoped to mask the small turn-out by hosting it in the 18th-century Manege center, a small space compared to the Crocus-expo center outside Moscow where the event was held in previous years.

To lure prospective oligarchs, the organizers posted a 44-foot-long limo out front along with some bear-skin-covered arm chairs and some thoroughbred horses.

“Everyone has been affected by the crisis, including the rich,” said Mark Tuck, who sells villas in Bali and who says business was down 40%.

Of course, some preferred to take the more optimistic, glass-half-full approach. “Up until now things have been fine, let’s see things in a positive light,” said Nasser Al-Hai, the head of the Dubai business Ultimate Motors.

Added one smiling salesgirl selling $20,000 skis: “I don’t speak about the crisis, I think positive!”

If you are selling $20,000 skis in this economy, perhaps that really is the best approach.

Making the Jaguar XJ greener

My system has alerted me that the Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi (204bhp) Executive Saloon 4dr 2720cc Diesel Automatic has changed today so I update my website and post here for the benefit of customers. No one else bothers with this stuff. I treat you like adult, not idiot.

Jaguar XJYour car belongs to the finance company on whose documents you agreed to the contract. Many different wear and tear agreements are issued, but it is safe to say that they all are similar to the industry standard issued by the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association). I have condensed the advice into an easy to read PDF file. If you have things to fix, I recommend 1st call to people like Dent Devils, mobile Glass Repair, etc. Cheap and often works. They usually come to you, in van. Easy. Treat this car like your own car and you will not go far wrong. If you sold a 2-year-old car privately, you would fix exact same problems. Common sense helps!

EnvironmentMercedes-Benz told me "Mercedes-Benz dealerships have a limited amount of space available in which to advertise. However, all of the dealership’s websites do include a link to the main site Mercedes-Benz.com where anyone in the world with an interest in obtaining specific environmental information about any Mercedes-Benz vehicle can easily find it. Environmental information is also available in brochures that can be obtained at any dealership." Well, perhaps Head Office at Mercedes-Benz restricts the amount of web space available to each dealer? It’s amazing that they use "space" as an argument for not displaying this info online on each dealer’s site. Web-space is virtually unlimited! A customer should not need to go to World Headquaters to find it (and even then it is not comparative)!

Hybrid vehicles combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery. There are various ways in which hybrid vehicles can operate. For example the electric motor can be used to provide additional power during acceleration and high load conditions. The battery can then be recharged by the internal combustion engine or from energy absorbed during braking, or, in some cases, from an external electrical supply. Hybrid vehicles offer reduced fuel consumption and CO2 with potentially some reduction in emissions of local pollutants.

Enviroment LabelWorking it out from the tables, the CO2 is just 209g/km for the Jaguar XJ Diesel Automatic. There are a few cars in this range, so different specs will give slightly different CO2 values. Click on the “fridge label” to get a enviroment label to print for this car. The combined cycle economy for this Jaguar XJ is now 35mpg

The Jaguar XJ falls into the K K band overall.

My Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi (204bhp) Executive Saloon 4dr 2720cc Diesel Automatic gearbox is only £631.35 inc VAT per month with 3 months initial payment, followed by 35 payments on direct debit. Business customers, make sure you deduct the VAT, when making decisions. As I can’t tell what type of customer you are (business or private), I can’t display the price any other way but to show VAT seperately (sorry!).

JaguarThis price on my Jaguar XJ includes full road tax for the length of the contract, on all of my cars and vans! Free delivery to your home or work and free collection from you at the end! £631.35 inc VAT per month is based on you driving 10,000 miles per annum, but higher mileages are usually available at a small extra cost. If you go over the allocated miles, you can pay a small excess mileage charge, usually between 3p and 15p per mile.

Jaguar XJSir Nicholas Stern, Head of the Government Economics Service, produced the UK Government Environmental Report on the Economics of Climate Change. I was so pleased to win an Environmental Award in 2008, myself. I am determined that LINGsCARS.com will go further than anyone else in this industry to exceed the legal minimum information disclosure. It is probably the case that my customers have the smallest environmental footprints of any new car customers in the UK!

Here’s a patronising tip from the government: “EnvironmentalSlow down – driving at high speeds significantly increases fuel consumption.”

Look at this comment. It is not just me who is a mentalist. “Ling, I found your site because you are a Googlewhack!!! If you enter the words "antidisestablishmentarianism multipla" you are the only site that is found!! I am, however, glad I found you because it is a mad site!!! I think you should get in touch with Dave Gorman to tell him you are a Googlewhack!

Mercedes Benz C63 AMG gets the Performance Package Plus Treatment

The Mercedes Benz C63 AMG super Sedan from Daimler got hotter for the coming season courtesy of the performance package plus treatment. The tuning kit for the C63 AMG borrows a few essential traits from the SLS AMG supercar pushing the power to 487hp (30hp more than the standard version). The treatment ensured that the 6.3L V8 beast got new forged alloy pistons, a new set of crank rods and a lightweight crankshaft all from the SLS territory. To top it all, a titanium-colored intake manifold and recalibrated computer module were mated to complete the package that now helps the car pelt from 0 to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. The braking ought to improve with a package such as this and therefore the brake package was upgraded with composite rotors. On the outside, the sedan version gets a carbon fiber spoiler. The upgraded Mercedes Benz C63 should be available in Europe later this year. Sleek, eh? [via Autoblog]

Rendered: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

The Mercedes-Benz CLS ignited the four-door coupe market when it was first introduced back in 2004, and since then we’ve seen several other luxury rivals attempt to emulate the design with cars like the 2010 Porsche Panamera, recently revealed 2010 Aston Martin Rapide and upcoming Audi A7.

For the second-generation CLS, expected to arrive in late 2010 as a 2011 model, Mercedes is set to popularize a niche segment once again, this time reinvigorating the ‘Shooting Brake’ bodystyle.

The Shooting Brake is essentially a two-door wagon, and Mercedes designers hinted at the possibility of a modern version with the unveiling of the ConceptFASCINATION study at the Paris Motor

2009 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The world’s most successful luxury car (W 221- series S-Class) which has sold 270,000 units in four years of production is now being replaced. Since the Model 220 came about in 1951 and started the lineage of the S-Class, German powerhouse Mercedes-Benz has sold around 3.3 million S-Class units.

Focusing on design and comfort with leading innovations Mercedes-Benz is now releasing the 2009 S-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has a huge range of engines available including one V6 turbo diesel and five petrol engines, including six, eight and twelve cylinders. These engines produce the same high output as the previous model while consuming up to seven percent less fuel.

Low rolling resistant tyres, steering and fuel pump modifications combined with the 7G-TRONIC automatic gearbox can reduce fuel consumption to 7.7 litres per 100kms in the S 350 CDI Blue Efficiency with 173kw.

Complementing the usual high safety standards expected from the S-Class is a range of new camera and radar driver assisted devices. These include ATTENTION ASSIST that detects driver drowsiness as well as Adaptive Highbeam Assist.

Night View Assist Plus can detect pedestrians, highlighting them on the display to make the noticeable.

Direct-Steer and modified Active Body Control with cross wind stabilisation for the eight and twelve cylinder models offer more agility and driving enjoyment.

Available in Mercedes-Benz showrooms and authorised dealerships from October 2009.

Farmington's Mercedes-Benz Financial releases iPhone app

Mercedes-Benz and iPhones seem like a natural combination of high-end toys for people who aren't exactly poor. It's why Mercedes-Benz Financial decided to combine the two to help streamline its payment process.

The Farmington Hills-based firm has recently released an application for iPhones that lets its users pay their car notes through smart phones. The 27-year-old automotive-focused finance company is the first of its kind to create an iPhone app that lets customers manage their accounts with safety, speed, and convenience.

"We're seeing more and more of our customers making payments to us electronically," says Jack Ferry, a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz Financial. "We want to extend that option to their iPhones."

The application is available for both iPhone and iPod Touch. It also allows users to find the nearest Mercedes-Benz authorized dealer location, contact a customer service representative, and see what's new from Mercedes-Benz Financial.

The firm employs about 350-400 people at its Farmington Hills office. It recently decided to keep its offices in Metro Detroit after the Daimler/Chrysler split. More than 450,000 people in five countries finance their cars through Mercedes-Benz Financial.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar

Magna, the Canadian supplier that hopes to buy 55% of General Motors' European Opel and Vauxhall business in a consortium with Russia's Sberbank, scored a coup with a contract to build the gull-winged Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG supercar.

Magna will assemble the 563-horsepower SLS at its assembly plant in Steyr, Austria.

The SLS AMG will be Mercedes' flagship model in terms of prestige and technology when it goes on sale next year.

That makes the deal to assemble the car a major endorsement of Magna's promise that it will erect a firewall between its customers' technology and the development of future Opel and Vauxhall vehicles. Volkswagen and BMW -- both major Magna customers -- have expressed concern about having their technology and production plans in the hands of a company that competes by building vehicles.

The SLS AMG is expected to cost more than $260,000. The car borrows some of its styling from Mercedes' iconic 1954 gull-wing 300SL.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio Patent Designs Leaked

The previous Mercedes-Benz CLK is something of an enigma--built around the C-Class platform, styled like the E-Class, and priced in between the two, the car sits in its own unique segment and has no direct competition from its rivals. Its sales history has been a strong success, especially in the U.S., but the car is set to meet its demise with the arrival of the new E-Class Coupe and the Cabrio in the middle of next year.

Previous spy shots show a prototype for the Cabrio model testing at Germany's Nurburgring, and as expected it draws heavily from the recent ConceptFASCINATION. The car will be about 4-inches longer than the CLK Cabrio that it replaces and it sticks with a traditional folding soft top. These leaked patent designs that were filed with the EU trademark office reveals how it will look when it makes its debut next year.

The engine lineup should mirror the Coupe, which means four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 200 to 382 horsepower--the top end model being the E550.

The decision to move the CLK to the E-Class platform will allow Mercedes to introduce a new entry-level coupe and convertible based on the C-Class, finally providing the automaker with a direct competitor to BMW’s popular 3-series two-door models. You can see a preview of such a car in our previous story by clicking here.

The story doesn’t end there, however, as Mercedes is also expected to launch a new ‘shooting brake’ model based on the ConceptFASCINATION, although no official details about its release have been mentioned.

Magna To Build Mercedes-Benz SLS Bodies

GRAZ, Austria — Canadian-Austrian auto parts giant Magna, which recently won a bidding war to acquire Opel, said it will build aluminum bodies for the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at its manufacturing facility here.

The company's Magna Steyr subsidiary will make a number of parts for the car, including the gullwing doors, hood and deck lid, and will supply much of the paintwork. Magna also will provide engineering support for the complete vehicle.

The Magna Steyr facility in Graz, formerly a part of Steyr-Daimler-Puch, has assembled the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen for 30 years. It will also assemble the Aston Martin Rapide and, beginning in 2012, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. In addition to the G-Class, Magna Steyr also has built such models as the BMW X3, the Saab 9-3 convertible, the Chrysler 300C and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The SLS goes into production next spring, priced from around $260,000.

Abu Dhabi fund buys into Banco Santander Brasil

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - The Abu Dhabi investment fund with the biggest stake in Mercedes-Benz said Sunday it has spent $328 million for a piece of a Brazilian bank recently floated by Spanish financial giant Banco Santander.

Aabar Investments' deal — the latest in a string of big bets by the fund this year — is another sign that Gulf governments are regaining their appetite for fresh investments and have plenty of cash left to spend despite the economic downturn.

It comes one day after Qatar's sovereign wealth fund said it boosted its stake in the company that owns much of London's Canary Wharf, a business district that houses offices for many of the world's best-known banks.

"We are delighted to have had the opportunity to invest in such a strong and successful entity," Aabar's chairman, Khadem al-Qubaisi, said in a brief statement announcing the Brazil deal.

"We hope to continue to strengthen and develop the existing relationship we have with Banco Santander and look forward to working with them in the future," he said.

Aabar has been among Abu Dhabi's most active investment funds in recent months, buying a 9.1 percent stake in Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler and nearly a third of commercial space travel startup Virgin Galactic.

It also owns 4 percent of San Carlos, California-based electric car producer Tesla Motors.

The Abu Dhabi government controls Aabar through a majority stake owned by its state-run International Petroleum Investment Co.

Abu Dhabi is the largest and richest of seven sheikdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates, and serves as the federation's capital. It controls nearly all of the OPEC member's conventional oil reserves, the world's fifth largest.

Its buy-in follows Banco Santander Brasil's $8.1 billion initial public offering last week.

Parent company Banco Santander SA initiated the IPO — the largest this year — in an effort to expand its Latin American operations.

It hopes to take advantage of one of the world's fastest growing economies by opening new branches and ATMs, and providing credit through its commercial banking and global wholesale banking divisions.

Santander is Brazil's third largest private sector bank behind Itau-Unibanco and Bradesco.

Aabar's purchase is the second major deal announced by Gulf state-backed investors in as many days.

On Saturday, Qatar Holding said it increased its holding in Songbird Estates PLC to 24 percent, making it the biggest shareholder in the real estate company that owns much of the Canary Wharf financial hub in east London.

Qatar Holding is the investment arm of the natural gas-rich Arab state's sovereign wealth fund.

It said its investment in Songbird now stands at more than 350 million pounds, or $559 million. It also owns stakes in European banks Barclays PLC and Credit Suisse Group, British supermarket operator J Sainsbury PLC and the London Stock Exchange.

KLEEMANN Mercedes-Benz SLK 55K S8 (2005)

Kleemann SLK 55K S8 Based on the New SLK 55 AMG
Kleemann presents yet another high-performance car without comparison. Based on the new SLK 55 AMG from Mercedes-Benz, Kleemann produces a power output of 596 bhp and 568 lb-ft with a Kleemann Kompressor System and a Stage 8 engine upgrade. The Kleemann SLK 55K S8 has an electronic speed limit of 300 km/h (186 mph) and hits 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

The power source in the SLK roadster is a specially revised version of the eight-cylinder Mercedes-Benz NA (Normally Aspirated) 5.5 litre engine. Equipped with only the Kleemann Kompressor system the engines power output raises from standard 360 bhp and 376 lb-ft to an impressive 550 bhp and 530 lb-ft.

Additionally the SLK 55K S8 is fitted with the Kleemann Stage 8 tuning kit. The engines ECU is reprogrammed and application specific super sport camshafts are fitted. To further improve the engines gas flow the 5.5 litre V8-engine is fitted with custom-developed headers in stainless steel and a complete dual 70 mm stainless steel exhaust system utilizing four steel racing catalysts. As the finishing touch to it all, the Kleemann SLK 55K S8 is fitted with two Trapezoid-shaped rear mufflers.

After the full tuning conversion from Kleemann the eight-cylinder engine delivers a maximum power output of 596 bhp / 438 kW at 5800 rpm and even more important for the overall driving characteristic is the peak torque of 568 lb-ft available from 2000 rpm. This incredible power is routed through a custom-made Kleemann Limited Slip Differential (LSD) which applies a 60 percent lock-up ratio between the rear wheels. This modification is essential for maximum traction of the driven wheels and the fantastic acceleration figures for this car.

The power treatment pushes the SLK roadster far beyond normal sports car territory. Not many super cars are able to accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds and 125 mph in 12.3 seconds, but the Kleemann SLK 55K S8 does so without any drama. Like all other high-performance Kleemann cars the top speed is electronically limited to 300 km/h (186 mph).

To meet the enormous performance potential of the Kleemann SLK 55K S8, Kleemann has developed exceptional upgrades in terms of wheels, suspension and brakes.

The Kleemann SLK 55K S8 comes with a choice between the classic two-piece TM-5 and the three-piece forged TS-6 light alloy wheel, which can be fitted on the car in sizes ranging from 17- to 19-inches in diameter. The largest possible combination on the SLK 55K S8 is the Kleemann TS-6 alloy wheel in size 8.5JX19 for the front axle with 235/35 ZR 19 tires, and 9.5JX19 with 275/30 ZR 19 tires on the rear. The special shape of the TS-6 rim star augments aerodynamics as it exhausts the air from underneath the car. In addition to reducing lift this also increases cooling of the brakes and adds to the handling and stability of the vehicle.

To further increase the cars handling characteristics Kleemann has fitted the car with Kleemann Speed Sensitive Suspension which reduces body roll and increases the cars turn-in capability. Designed specifically for use with sporty low-profile tires it's a perfect combination of agile cornering and extraordinary ride comfort.

The safety aspect is handled by the Kleemann high performance brake system, which is designed for maximum performance under the most extreme braking tasks. Fitted with the largest KB-3 Kleemann high performance brake system the Kleemann SLK 55K S8 features 396 x 36 mm vented and cross-drilled two-piece brake discs with six piston forged and handmade calipers in the front, and 342 x 28 mm vented and cross-drilled two-piece brake discs with four piston forged and handmade calipers in the rear.

For further refinement of the sporty two-seater Kleemann can fit aerodynamic parts that emphasize the cars striking appearance. The cars front design becomes even more muscular with the low and stunning looking Kleemann front spoiler lip. To round of the visual look a custom developed rear diffuser panel is fitted making provision for the Kleemann sport exhaust system with one Trapezoid shaped rear muffler in each side.

Another focal point of refining the Kleemann SLK 55K S8 is the interior. Kleemann offers an extensive programme for the sporty roadster ranging from full leather to a combined leather/alcantara interior. The Kleemann program also includes a wide selection of individual accessories such as illuminated entrance panels with Kleemann logo, and an ergonomic Kleemann sport steering wheel with a choice of leather, leather/wood or leather/carbon. The finishing touch to the interior is genuine carbon inlays on the dashboard, centre console and door covers which creates a sporty yet comfortable and exclusive feeling.

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid Qualified for Hybrid Vehicle Credit

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has designated the new Mercedes-Benz 2010 S400 Hybrid (earlier post) as eligible for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit as a Qualified Hybrid Motor Vehicle. Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid customers are eligible for a one-time tax credit of up to $1,150.

The S 400 BlueHYBRID is the first series-production hybrid to be equipped with a Li-ion battery. Continental and Johnson Controls-Saft (JCS) are teaming on the pack, with JCS is providing the cells. Continental is the pack integrator and will also supply power electronics: the inverter and the DC/DC converter.

The battery works in combination with a 20 hp (15 kW) electric motor and a 275-hp, 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine to deliver EPA mileage ratings of 19 mpg US city and 26 mpg US highway—an improvement of 26% when compared to the V8-powered S550 sedan. The 120-volt lithium-ion battery weighs less than most other batteries and can be installed in the engine compartment, requiring no reductions in trunk or cabin space.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia To Push Newly Launched Truck

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd aims to sell between 150 and 200 units of its newly launched heavy-duty truck next year, its vice-president of commercial vehicles, Rainer Schaefer, said Tuesday.

The company had started delivering the new Mercedes-Benz Actros Third Generation since last month, he told reporters after the launch here today.

Schaefer said the first generation Mercedes-Benz Actros was introduced in 1996 and the second generation model in 2002.

The Actros family is acknowledged to be the world's best-selling heavy-duty truck, with about 600,000 units sold in more than 100 countries, he said.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia expects to sell about 150 units of heavy-duty trucks this year with the second and third generation Mercedes-Benz Actros.

"Our target is to sell 150 units this year but we are trying to do more than that. The problem is that it is very difficult for our customers to obtain financing," Schaefer said.

Last year, the company sold over 200 units of the second generation Mercedes-Benz Actros, he said.

Currently, he added, the company was holding an average of 30 per cent market share of the heavy-duty truck segment in Malaysia.

Spy Shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz CLS ignited the four-door coupe market when it was first introduced back in 2004, and since then we’ve seen several other luxury rivals attempt to emulate the design with cars like the 2010 Porsche Panamera, recently revealed 2010 Aston Martin Rapide and upcoming Audi A7.

Now, prototypes for Mercedes’ next-generation CLS has been spotted, revealing a few subtle clues about the new model. These latest shots show the high-performance AMG model, which is likely to be the dubbed the CLS63 in reference to its 6.2-liter V-8 engine.

Clear giveaways that this is the AMG model are the quad exhaust tailpipes, additional air vents on the bonnet, and oversized brakes.

Expect to see similar performance to that of the 2010 E63, which means an engine output of about 525-horsepower and 465-pound-feet of torque and a 0-62-mph time of around 4.6 seconds. Drive is likely to be channelled rearward via AMG’s new SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

The new CLS range, including the AMG model, is expected to be launched in late 2010 as a 2011 model, and positioned more upmarket to bring it in line with some of its more premium rivals. This will also allow Mercedes to introduce a second four-door coupe model, rumored to be based on its next-generation small car platform.

The new design will feature a wider track, as indicated by the extended wheel arches seen on previous test mules, and according to insiders its platform will be borrowed from the current S-Class sedan flagship.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which is about to celebrate its world premiere on 15 September 2009 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main, embodies a blend of consummate automotive fascination and high tech. The super sports car delivers a compelling mix of purist styling, consistent lightweight design and superior driving dynamics. At the same time, the SLS fully lives up to all the expectations of hallmark Mercedes everyday practicality and optimum safety. In essence, the new 'Gullwing' offers the ideal synthesis of the strengths of Mercedes-Benz and AMG.

The new super sports car from Mercedes-Benz and AMG makes for an alluring proposition with its unrivalled technology package: aluminium spaceframe body with gullwing doors, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine developing 420 kW/ 571 hp peak output, 650 Nm of torque and dry sump lubrication, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration, sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones and a kerb weight of 1620 kilograms based on the DINstandard – this superlative combination guarantees driving dynamics of the highest order. The ideal front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent and the vehicle's low centre of gravity are testimony to the uncompromising sports car concept. The 'Gullwing' accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 317 km/h (electronically limited). The fuel consumption of 13.2 litres per 100 kilometres (combined) puts it at the front of the competitive field (all figures provisional).

"Mercedes-Benz is presenting an exhilarating super sports car in the guise of the new SLS AMG, which is bound to set the pulses of all car enthusiasts racing that extra bit faster. The brands Mercedes-Benz and AMG have joined forces to create the SLS AMG– which is set to become one of the most alluring sports cars of all time", says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"Our customers will experience with the SLS AMG the expertise of Mercedes-AMG, built up over 40 years of motor racing. The unrivalled technology package delivers outstanding driving dynamics coupled with moderate fuel consumption figures – part and parcel of the modern-day AMG," says Volker Mornhinweg, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

"The styling of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is not only very special because of the exclusive gullwing doors. Our aspiration is to utilise this interpretation to create the classic of tomorrow and roll out the most alluring sports car of the 21st century. Our aim is also to create a new design icon, which shapes the incomparable legend of our brand, alongside Mercedes models like the CLS or the SL. At the same time, the new SLSpaves the way for the design philosophy of forthcoming Mercedes-Benz sports cars", says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Road Test: 2009 Mercedes-Benz B200 Turbo

Mercedes' B-Class is one of those vehicles that is really, really good at what it does, even if its mission isn't the most exciting one in the industry. Of all the compact luxury models, the B would have to be relegated as merely cute as a bug, rather than drop-dead sexy like BMW's 1-Series coupe and cabriolet, Audi's ultra-hot A3 or even Volvo's slick little C30. Just the same, only the A3 comes close to the B as far as practicality goes, and in this segment, where fuel economy and people hauling rule, it's king of the road.

More of a mini-minivan, or MPV as they're referred to in Europe, the B-Class is abbreviated from nose to tail, yet it's quite tall. Its shape, slightly reworked for 2009 with new bumpers, grille, hood, rear load sill guard, wider rear window, updated liftgate handle, new two-piece tail lamps, shorter antenna, and new wheel designs, is rounded up front and slab-like at the rear, completely unique looking and totally purposeful. No one will accuse you of being frivolous when eyeing you behind the wheel through the wide-open greenhouse, yet no one will think you're cheap or without means either, especially those that ride along with you.

Yes, climb inside the updated interior and you won't be disappointed, it's a true Mercedes-Benz. From the ultra-wide centre stack housing top-tier switchgear, to the large, comfortable seats that support buttocks and backside and boast all-new very attractive Artico leather and fabric upholstery on reshaped cushions, this is one accommodating little car. And it doesn't matter how small or large you are, as you'll find the B roomy in every direction, especially if you're taller than average where the lofty roof will give you overhead airspace to spare. The roofliner is the kind of top-tier woven fabric all good cars use, and it wraps down each pillar the way I like it. Most plastic surfaces are soft to the touch, and appear durable enough to last through years of family abuse.

New for this year is a standard Audio 20 stereo head unit with a CD changer, Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 compatibility, while an iPod connection and MP3 interface is optional. The Turbo's 17-inch five-twin-spoke wheels on 215/45R17 all-season tires are standard, while an optional Premium Package adds a panoramic sunroof, Myrtle Wood trim, heated front seats and an electronic compass. An optional Entertainment Package includes Sirius satellite radio and a harman/kardon Logic7 Sound audio upgrade. Incidentally, the auto-dimming rearview mirror and rain-sensing wipers that now come standard on the base non-turbo car are also included with the B200 Turbo.

The drive is more large-car than small, too, with good stability thanks to a nice wide track, and none of the fore and aft bobbing I initially thought its stubby wheelbase would cause. The top-line B200 Turbo really gets up and moves along, thanks to an energetic 193hp four-cylinder that makes 206 lb-ft of torque way down low in its rev range, 1,800 rpm to be exact. Spirited takeoff is near immediate and the CVT gearbox, complete with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift actuation, is a good companion to the engine, keeping the revs at peak power all the way up to the desired speed, and holding gears mid-corner if desired.

For those concerned about safety in such a small car, Mercedes is clear to point out that its innovative "sandwich" double floor design is about as safe as body shells come. Basically, the car's engine, transmission and other running gear is housed under the cabin with driver and passengers placed higher above, a configuration that also delivers a commanding view of the road, not unlike a small crossover SUV or minivan. If struck from the front, the drivetrain will move under the car, protecting occupants inside from anything mechanical entering the cabin, and pushing the body shell upwards and out of the way of the vehicle or object being hit. Of course, a full assortment of airbags comes standard too, as do four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, plus electronic traction and stability control.

The B200 Turbo is relatively lightweight, at least for a Mercedes, at 1,430 kilos (3,152 lbs) as outfitted or 1,395 kg (3,075 lbs) with the standard six-speed manual transmission, optimizing performance and fuel economy. To the latter end, Canada's EnerGuide rating system estimates 10.3L/100km in the city and 6.9 on the highway, although marring the experience is the need for premium fuel. And yes, if you think you can escape pricy premium grade gas with the non-turbo engine, which incidentally makes 134hp and 136 lb-ft of torque, you'll be out of luck, but it does achieve better fuel economy numbers at 9.2 and 6.7L/100km respectively. Mercedes warrants the car bumper-to-bumper (more or less) for four years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first, which is average for the premium class. At $32,400 for the Turbo (and $29,900 for the base B200) it's not the cheapest in its segment either, but it's totally in sync with its competitors and the three-pointed star on the grille does benefit resale value.

The B200 Turbo is a fun car to drive for sure, but more importantly it's a fabulously functional people and gear hauler with a stellar cargo bay capable of stowing up to 544 litres (19.1 cu ft) of what-have-you with the seats up and 1,530 litres (54.0 cu ft) with the rear seats lowered, which incidentally is totally impossible inside any of its premium competitors. So, before you bite the bait dangled by one of M-B's European rivals, consider that the car you're about to buy is the car you have to live with for three or more years, and that the B's day-to-day livability is top-notch. There might not be a lot of sex appeal to that scenario, but my significant other always told me that I was sexiest when doing the dishes or taking out the trash. Practicality does have its merits.

The Green Future of Mercedes-Benz: Driving the S 400 Hybrid

Treehugger takes the new hybrid Mercedes for a spin – with mixed results.
I’m still buzzing from the Frankfurt auto show. With its many visual delights, the IAA is arguably the most important gathering of automakers in the world. Much of my focus centered around Mercedes-Benz (after all, Daimler AG was my host), and I’m still sorting through all there is to say about this company as it becomes a more and more important contender in the green car battle. Mercedes is now moving into the luxury hybrid market, a space that has been decidedly Lexus’ up till now. While the S 400 hybrid has been a fast seller in Europe (accounting for almost 20% of S-Class orders since June), it has only just rolled into US dealerships. I test drove the S 400 on roads winding through cabbage and pumpkin farms outside Mercedes’ home of Stuttgart, getting a good feel for this new luxury hybrid offering. – From TreeHugger

LORINSER TUNES THE FACE-LIFTED MERCEDES-BENZ M-CLASS

In fitting with its recent face-lift, Sportservice Lorinser provides the latest refreshed M-Class with a special sporty kick in the form of a newly designed aerodynamic package.

lorinser mercedes-benz m-class

The traditional vehicle tuner from Winnenden has specifically worked on the sporty character traits of the powerful SUV. Here the designers used a special trick: due to the components which have been moved much lower and thoroughly varnished, they brought the four-wheeler much closer to the tarmac. In particular the new Lorinser four-fin grill, which only ends on the lower edge of the fog lights, lets the whole vehicle sit so close to the tarmac that you can “feel” it. The strongly contoured front spoiler with the sports grill insert just above the underride protection strengthens the image of the steeled Autobahn attacker. At the same time round lines and curves break up the geometric front and provide an elegant note.

The Lorinser side sills underline laterally the muscular side of the M-Class: they extend the bodywork optically downwards – in particular with black colour the SUV seems to melt into the road. The contact with the road surface is actually provided by diverse Lorinser light-alloy wheels, as chosen by the customer, with which the owner can give his/her M-Class a special individual note. Many designs are available, both in black and silver, so that the vehicle can reveal a completely different character, depending on the customer’s wishes.

But not just the attack and midfield of Lorinser M-Class is first-class. At the back Lorinser has brought in a massive and plastic-formed rear spoiler. With a sports grill and the underride protection moved much lower, it promises a dominant playing strategy with the strong series standard petrol and diesel engines of the M-Class: one step on the accelerator and the four massive Lorinser exhaust pipes provide the starting whistle.
